He lived in Hartford, Connecticut. As a child then he moved to New York. He had a varied education due to is dad and he changed schools several times. He ended up going to an English high school of Boston a school specializing in mathematics. Later he got sick with rheumatic fever that left him in so much pain he could not walk.

He started out as a banker. Then he became a agent for his fathers firm in New York City. He was a member of the firm Dabney, Morgan & Company he bought rifles for the army to get to power he went through several financial battles then he became involved in financing railroads.

He wanted to buy Carnegie steel but Andrew Carnegie refused to sell so he stole all of Carnegie’s clients forcing him to sell the company. He was a robber baron because he forced people to sell their companies to him by steeling their clients. But he was a captain of industry because he later helped finance some of the entrepreneurs.
