Born September 16, 1838, James was born in Eramosa Township, Ontario. At the age thirteen he made himself a middle name Jerome, he named it after the bother of napoleon, witch he had admired. James had nine years of schooling, and left at age fourteen from fathers death. Hill moved to Minnesota on July 21, 1856, he was a clerk forBrunson, Lewis and White, agents for a steamboat company.
James was a big investor he bought the nearly bankrupt St. Paul and Pacific railroad. His success was the Great Northern Railroad one of witch he invested in. Hill had so many investments that he became worth about $63 million. Hill built the stone arch brige in Minneapolis and also funded the Hill reference library.
Mr. Hill had the most expensive house in Minnesota ($931,275.01).
The house is 36,000 Square feet on 5 floors. Also Hills home had 22 fireplaces. Mr. Hill was both robber barren and captain of industry. James married Mary Mehegan,and they had ten childern. Also James one of his son became the president of the Great Northern Railroad.
