The famous Thomas Fortune Ryan was born on October 17th, 1851 in Lovington, Virginia. His life was a little different then most because he had to grow up without a mom. When Thomas was 5 years old his mother Lucinda had died. His father was a tailor manager of a small hotel but 2 years after the death of his wife he remarried and moved to Tennessee. At the age of 17 Ryan moved to Baltimore to seek his fortune. While moving he also converted into a Catholic. In Baltimore he was hired for a dry goods merchant. In the year 1872 Ryan moved to New York and his boss John S. Barry helped him to secure a brokerage assistant position. While in New York a year after he had gotten there he married his former boss’s daughter Iola Mary Barry. They had three lovely children together. He became so famous and wealthy from being an underway railroad worker on Broadway. He also was famous by being active in politics, in which he controlled much of the cities operations. Thomas F. Ryan died on November 23rd in 1928. He left his family over $200 million dollars in wealth.
